Play, code & tinker

[ English version ]

Play, code & tinker

[ auf Deutsch lesen ]

We continue to work on the idea of creating a space for regular meetings, and playful learning through mentorship and experimentation. Aimed initially at the needs of technology-fascinated children and teenagers, we would like this to also be a discussion platform for young data journalists and hardware makers.

Before a regular programming and learning meetup in Bern can be organized and advertised, we have been researching existing youth programming initiatives in Switzerland. Besides Saras experience with Scalable Game Design at the Pedagogical University FHNW in Brugg-Windisch, we especially want to call out our recent visit to the CoderDojo in Zurich:

Looking over the heads of the 10 to 12-year-old participants, we spent two hours with their mentors Bartosz, Ale and Martin. They let us put our questions to them, and we discussed and got details about their experiences of the weekly CoderDojos. (Thank you! ^_^)

These were our key takeaways:

  • Focus on light, playful introduction to code for girls and boys
  • No participation fee, free meetings every two weeks
  • Sustainable application of Free Software
  • Open hardware preference for Robotics / Sensors
  • Free (sponsored) use of space and infrastructure

The most useful tools, basic knowledge and recommendations can be tried for such an event, can be found at CoderDojo Kata or experiences of individual Dojos, such as the one in Zürich or Potsdam.

At the Zurich CoderDojo we saw a mixture of Scratch for simple games, the use of Python to control a colorful LED matrix with a RaspberryPi and sense hat.
